This is who we are
Find out more about our many years of experience as one of the leading original parts manufacturers for starters, alternators and 48V mild-hybrid Boost Recuperation Machines (BRM). Discover our global network and get to know the ‘lean back quality’.
The original.
Longstanding tradition.
As a leading global automotive supplier for starters, alternators and 48V mild hybrid Boost Recuperation Machines (BRM) we stand for more than a century of development and manufacturing competences.
After becoming an independent company from the long-standing “Starter Motors and Generators” business unit of the Bosch Group in 2018, the name SEG Automotive is now found on products for original equipment and aftermarket sales. Due to the continuous expansion of our activities, the brand is gaining increasing attention and importance in the automotive and commercial vehicle industry.
Independent and Original Equipment Service (OES) aftermarket.
As an original equipment manufacturer for passenger cars, light and heavy commercial vehicles and buses, we serve a wide range of vehicles. In fact, about one in three new vehicles today is equipped with products from SEG Automotive. The wide use of our products in new vehicles, the availability of new and remanufactured items as well as product range expansions enable us to offer the right solutions in the aftermarket. This means that our customers in Europe alone have access to over 2,300 articles with more than 115,000 vehicle linkages.
Local for local globally.
Global presence.
With production facilities and sales offices in 14 countries and a team of 6,000 employees, we supply automotive manufacturers, dealers, and purchasing groups worldwide. Our corporate headquarters is located at the founding site in Stuttgart, Germany.
Efficient global supply chain.
Our aim is to ensure that we always supply our customers from regional warehouses and production facilities in order to fulfil short delivery routes. If a regional delivery is not feasible, we use our global production network to realise the supply. This flexibility ensures we create the best option tailored to our customers’ needs.
Lean back quality
OE quality.
As an original equipment manufacturer, we meet the demanding certification standards of the automotive industry. Combined with our extensive experience, this defines the high quality of our aftermarket products. They are characterized by long lifespan, high reliability, optimal fit, and CO2 efficiency.
OE production lines.
Manufacturing on highly automated series production lines in accordance with OE standards and the 100% quality and functional testing of every starter motor, alternator and BRM at the end of production are essential steps to ensure that no compromises are made in terms of quality. This meticulous approach is crucial for low failure rates and therefore increases the satisfaction of workshop customers, workshops and dealers alike.
Our products
Discover our aftermarket portfolio and find out what makes our products stand out.
Starter – Our origin.
Since the early 20th century, SEG Automotive has been a renowned manufacturer of starter motors for 12 and 24 volt applications.
SEG Automotive starters are known for their exceptional reliability and robustness and are suitable for a wide range of climatic conditions. Our range includes a versatile selection of starters for various vehicle categories, including passenger cars, commercial vehicles in both the light and heavy-duty segments, as well as buses.
Due to our extensive experience as an original equipment manufacturer, we have a deep understanding of our products and their specific applications. This enables us to make well-founded vehicle categorisations, which ultimately help the workshop to fit the right vehicle.
Alternator – Our power house.
The higher the requirements for reliable power supply, the greater the expectations placed on the generator.
SEG Automotive’s efficient and robust alternators provide a fitting solution for various applications in both passenger cars and commercial vehicles across all classes.
The high durability of our alternators reflects all the principles of our ‘lean-back quality’. The simple installation and precise mounting points contribute to easy installation in the vehicle.
48V Boost Recuperation Machine (BRM) – Our new star.
This is what the name Boost Recuperation Machine is about.
- Boost – Short electric acceleration support
- Recuperation – Energy recovery during braking
- Machine – Electric machine as part of the combustion engine
As the adoption of 48 Volt mild hybrids continues to increase in vehicles on the streets, their relevance for the independent aftermarket becomes imminent.
SEG Automotive serves the hybrid market with the 48V Boost Recuperation Machine (BRM), a low voltage starter generator.
The BRM is the star product for the next decade. It is an easy-to-implement electrification solution for vehicle manufacturers of hybrid and mild hybrid vehicles.
Integration into a mild hybrid vehicle enables energy recovery during braking and deceleration. The recovered energy is stored in a 48V battery and can be used to support the combustion engine during acceleration (boost) or in phases with low power requirements. This improves overall efficiency, resulting in lower fuel consumption of approx. 1 litre per 100 kilometres and correspondingly lower CO2 emissions.
Today, more than a million vehicles are equipped with a BRM from SEG Automotive, which makes us an experienced supplier in this product segment.
When replacing the BRM in the workshop, no additional safety or training measures are required compared to working on high-voltage systems. The installation and replacement process is similar to that of a conventional 12V alternator. However, when installing a BRM, the vehicle-specific software must also be programmed.
In addition to the typical applications in mild hybrid cars, the BRM is also used in electrically powered two- and three-wheelers, thus extending the range of applications beyond the classic automotive sector.
Driving the BRM.
- Recuperation of kinetic braking energy
- Improved supply of high-power consumers compared to 12 Volt vehicle electrical systems
- Driving with the engine switched off (coasting)
- Engine shutdown/restart when stationary, similar to conventional 12V start/stop technology
- Fast, low-vibration engine start
- Acceleration support through electric boost function
- Reduction of total fuel consumption by up to -15%*
*compared to a conventional combustion engine with average fuel consumption of 7.0 l/100 km
The eco-innovation.
Our BRM was the first to introduce the 48 Volt claw-pole machine concept to the market. Due to its technical advantages compared to the asynchronous machine concept, it prevailed in the market, and became the leading concept.
In a groundbreaking test and validation procedure developed by SEG Automotive, we demonstrated that our BRM achieves significantly higher fuel savings in real-world operation compared to the official test cycles (formerly NEDC, now WLTP).
The results of this test procedure received official recognition from the European Union, and the BRM was acknowledged as an EU eco-innovation. As a result, car manufacturers can deduct 2 grams CO2 per kilometer from their vehicle test cycle results.
Components & spare parts – Our small helpers.
Spare parts and components from SEG Automotive in OE quality complement our aftermarket portfolio.
They are especially well-suited for cost-effective repairs. This positively impacts product longevity and supports responsible resource management.
As an original equipment manufacturer for starter motors and alternators, we know what is important when it comes to spare parts. Our precise specifications enable an accurate allocation to our products.
Reman – As good as new.
Reman products by SEG Automotive meet the requirements for new products in terms of quality and service life.
In fact, by using the latest versions of components and the latest technology, the remanufactured product can even be better than when it was first introduced.
We remanufacture items across our entire product portfolio, including starters, alternators and the 48V Boost Recuperation Machine (BRM).

Environmental responsibility
At SEG Automotive, our commitment to sustainability and social responsibility is reflected in the inherent design of our products, which are specifically aimed at reducing emissions and saving resources. Additionally, we are active in many ways to further reduce our ecological footprint.
Optimizing transportation and logistics.
We aim to optimize our transportation and logistics processes to minimize CO2 emissions across all areas. To achieve this goal, we prioritize short transportation routes specifically designed for local delivery. In addition, we require our suppliers to inform us about the carbon footprint of the products they supply to us.
Reducing environmental impact.
In our ongoing efforts to reduce our environmental impact, our remanufactured products contribute significantly by saving up to 94% of carbon dioxide emissions & 81% of material compared to new products.
Use of green electricity.
Most SEG Automotive locations obtain part of their electricity from renewable energy sources - in some cases, electricity is generated directly on site. Around 27% of the electricity consumed worldwide is green electricity. The proportion of renewable energy is being increased year by year. The aim is for 100% of electricity to come from renewable sources by 2030.
